Presentation abstract: The DST funded Information Security Centre of Competence (ISCoC): The talk addresses the Centre of Competence concept and focus areas, initial projects, initial results of an audit of South African tertiary education and research, opportunities for cooperation in the National System of Innovation.

About Barend Taute:
Dr Barend Taute is an electrical engineer specialising in the use of technology for improved safety and security. He is currently acting manager in a research area dedicated to safety and security. Dr Taute has considerable experience in the field of microwaves, antenna design, radar measurements and technology coordination in the defence environment. He specialised in electromagnetic theory and measurements. He has 10 years' experience with Criminal Justice System and Security related technology support, providing project management and supporting partners with technology strategy, research, development, acquisition support and operational support. Application areas include processes, sensors and systems for border control and security, deployment of surveillance systems, improved electronic vehicle identification, technology strategy for law enforcement and correctional services, cyber security and forensics. Taute was appointed by the Department Science and Technology as South Africa’s national contact point for security research within the European Union Framework Programme 7.
